Why it is bad to eat late at night.

e all have some of those days when eating late is the order of the night. When nothing brings the satisfaction except the pleasure of eating despite the time of the day.

Eating late might be fun especially when you are with friends and family, but, have you ever paused and think of the dangers of late eating?

  1. Apart from the fact that late eating contributes to weight gain, a new study has confirmed that snacking late could increase the risk of diabetes and heart diseases. This is because the late timing of meals can affect cholesterol levels which can increase the risk of heart disease or suffer a heart attack.
  2. Believe it or not, late eating can have an impact on cognitive functions. According to American researchers, eating late could affect your memory. The studies, from the University of California, found that eating at irregular hours, such as late at night had the potential to impact cognitive functions.
  3. Late night snacking or eating makes you more hungry the next morning. Your body has a biological clock it has already adapted to, the cycle is ongoing, making you hungrier than usual, which could potentially lead to weight gain.
  4.  Eating heavy meals late at night and going straight to bed is the main contributor of acid reflux. The reason for this is because it takes your stomach a few hours to empty the food you eat.  According to scientific research, eating and going straight to bed allows for the acid to spill out of your still full stomach and leak into your oesophagus, leading to acid reflux. It is advised to finish eating by 7 pm to avoid acid reflux. This could also contribute to heartburn or oesophagus cancer.
     
  5. Eating late at night increases the risks of heart attack. Reseach found that eating dinner late at night had the most significant impact on overnight blood pressure. Eating high salt content diet before doing to bed contribute more to the risk factors.
  6. Eating late at night have a negative effect on your sleep patterns and dreams. In other words, eating late can contribute to the weird dreams you are having. Eating too much of dairy products and spicy meals just before bedtime could blame for the confusing dreams due to gastrointestinal discomfort which in turn can cause difficulty sleeping.
